Anime

Yuri anime in general is rather far and inbetween, but they do exist. And also it's kind of an issue that yuri anime tend to be... Pretty bad or low budget in terms of the animation quality. I'll be sure to add a note on what it's based on. Because if a manga has an anime adaptation, it won't be in the manga section of the website.

Bloom Into You
AKA Yagate Kimi ni Naru or Yagakimi
Episodes: 13

Tags: high school, slice of life, drama, student council, love triangle

Notes: Based on a manga

Bloom Into You is slow burn(?) romance between Yuu and her senior Touko. It's extremely popular for being a 'deep' yuri and subverting many common romance troupes, mainly the fact that the story focuses on how falling in love can be a slow process, which is fairly realistic. To some, Bloom Into You is a rather boring show/manga. Note that the anime ends before where the manga does.

Citrus
Episodes: 12

Tags: high school, slice of life, drama, incest, student council

Notes: Based on a manga

Citrus is one of the most popular modern yuri names on the yuri market. Yuzu begins her new school year at an all girl’s school and discovers that she has a step sister, Mei. She begins to develop feelings for Mei as much drama happens. The entire show is a soap opera. People either hate it or love it. But even if terrible, it’s still very entertaining to (hate) watch.

Netsuzou Trap -NTR-
Episodes: 12

Tags: high school, slice of life, drama, NTR, cheating, bisexual

Notes: Based on a manga

Two childhood friends have their respective boyfriends and they cheat on their boyfriends with each other.

As much as I’d enjoy watching men fail, this ain’t it chief. The main characters just come across as massive bitches more than decent human beings. I dropped it early when it was still a manga and delegated it to trainwreck reading sessions and a hate read. I guess you’ll enjoy this if you love trashy drama.

Akuma no Riddle
AKA Riddle Story of Devil
Episodes: 12

Tags: action, assassin, drama, high school, tomboy, violence

Notes: Has a manga

Akuma no Riddle follows tokaku, the lead assassin in her respective assassin school. She is sent to another boarding school to participate in a prestigious event where other star assassins from other schools compete to kill a single target within their class. However, Tokaku begins to develop feelings for the target and decides to protect her.

This one isn't the most romantic series out there and I didn't find it too satisfying yuri wise. But the story and the events that unfolded was like watching a high speed trainwreck. The ending unfortunately, didn't feel all too satisfying. I'd skip it unless you're looking for some dumb fun. Also Tokaku just looks like a boy in a skirt.

Sasameki Koto
Episodes: 13

Tags: high school, drama, comedy, angst

Notes: Based on a manga

Murasame Sumika is an intelligent and athletic girl who is in love with her best friend, Kazama Ushio. She is unable to confess her feelings, not because they are both girls, but because she isn’t Kazama’s type. Kazama is only into cute girls and Sumika is not cute and way too cool for that.

It was quite the long drawl and an angsty anime, however, it does play a lot into the romance bits and build up. I recommend a watch.

YuruYuri
Episodes: 13

Tags: comedy, slice of life

Notes: Based on a 4koma manga

Three girls in an all-girls school form the ‘Amusement Club’ which occupies the now nonexistent Tea Club’s room. They try to convince another girl to join them.

It’s a slice of life comedy. I’m extremely tempted to put this down in the subtext section. It’s not gay. It’s gay played for weak laughs. The other jokes are pretty good (sometimes) though. But if you really wanted to see three girlfailures do funny things, go watch Asobi Asobase.

Sakura Trick
Episodes: 12

Tags: high school, comedy, idiot couple

Notes: Based on a 4koma manga

Yuu and Haruka were inseparable during junior high, but a cruel twist of fate put them on opposite sides of class when they entered senior high. Forced to spend more time with their other classmates, they decide to do something to keep their relationship special.

Which is… Kissing. In every episode. All the time. Everywhere. It’s a slice of life comedy of CGDCT and gay kissing. They kiss so much that I think it’s the only thing in this show that I remember. I’m sorry, it’s gay, but somehow, I don’t like it. Do they even swing that way…?

Sono Hanabira Ni Kuchizuke Wo (OVA)
AKA A Kiss For The Petals
Episodes: 1

Tags: high school, NSFW, lots of sex

Notes: It’s an extra special of a Visual Novel

WARNING: NSFW, this is porn

Follows Mai and Reo, two girls from their original visual novel. Mai is chasing after Reo (again) and sex ensues. This is more yuri hentai than romance. But it is also the best animated (purely) yuri hentai there is.

Don't go around watching this for any plot, there's none.

Yurikuma Arashi
Episodes: 12

Tags: drama, high school, fantasy

Notes: Has a manga

Kureha and Sumika are two lovers attending Arashigaoka Academy. Two bears have snuck through the Wall of Severance and infiltrated the academy, to which they find their relationship under great threat.

It's quite surreal and artistic. It's very metaphorical. If I'm not wrong it's an artistic way of talking about how people are okay and even encourage the love between girls, but then they don't want to face the more gritty or sexual parts of it, which is pretty hypocritical. I remember not enjoying it as much as I should, but that's probably because I'm a dumb autist who can't appreciate art. It was very gay though.

Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san
Episodes: 12

Tags: high school, BDSM, comedy, idiot couple

Notes: Based on a 4koma manga

A high school slice of life comedy between Inugami and Nekoyama. Masochistic Inugami has a dog-like personality and likes cats. Nekoyama has a cat-like personality and likes dogs.

It’s one of those 5 minute comedy anime. It was quite gay at some points and I enjoyed it. It’s not a full blown romance though, keep that in mind. Subtext that’s basically shilled as yuri. But I honestly thought the yuri was gayer than Kobayashi.

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid
Episodes: 13

Tags: comedy, monster girl, office lady, slice of life

Notes: Based on a manga

Kobayashi lives alone in an apartment until one day, Tooru appears and they end up living together. It’s a mythical slice of life comedy about a hard working office lady living with a dragon girl.

I don’t think it was gay enough for me to be honest. I saw it as every other ‘’’yuri’’’ anime out there which is basically heavy subtext shilled as ‘yuri’. Maybe I’m wrong, and there will be full blown romance in the manga.

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady
AKA Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou no Mahou Kakumei
Episodes: 12

Tags: isekai, fantasy, drama, comedy

Notes: Based on a light novel, has a manga adaptation

Princess Anisphia is born unable to use normal magic and develops "magicology" as a way around it; Anisphia watches Euphilia get stripped of her engagement and offers to help her regain her reputation.

tldr;

>crashes brother's graduation party

>steals his fiancee

>refuses to elaborate

>leaves

It’s VERY gay and a good watch. Nice animation and all that. I'd watch the anime over reading the light novel because the adaptation fixes a few things.

Shokei Shoujo no Virgin Road
AKA The Executioner and Her Way of Life
Episodes: 12

Tags: isekai, action, fantasy, drama

Notes: Based on a light novel, has a manga adaptation

Menou, an Executioner, meets a Stray named Akari, who she kills without hesitation. Yet, Akari comes back to life. They journey together while Menou finds a way to kill her.

I watched like 3 episodes of this and wasn’t feeling the second lead or any good chemistry. I’m leaving this here so that I’ll finish watching it and read the manga + light novel before putting down my thoughts.

Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid
Episodes: 18

Tags: action, fantasy, ecchi

Notes: Anime original

Mamori (a virgin) arrives on an island where you must compete in battle using special powers that are only activated through sexual activity with the other girls on the island.

I don’t remember much about this at all other than the fact that it was basically softcore porn at some points and I wasn’t feeling the two leads, I dropped it 3 episodes in. Is it gay? Yeah. I still think it's male coom trash though. Maybe I'll get around to watching all of it in the future, but for now, no.

Happy Sugar Life
Episodes: 12

Tags: psychological horror, high school, lolicon, age gap, drama, yandere

Notes: Based on a manga

Satou Matsuzaka is a beautiful high schooler who has a reputation for sleeping around with men. However, she meets a young girl named Shio Koube and she falls in love with her. She essentially kidnaps Shio and would do anything to protect her, even resorting to desperate measures to ensure that their "happy sugar life" remains intact.

I never really liked this one. Not very gay. It’s meant to be a horror and something pretty dark. Satou is just obsessive and as down bad as every other creep/pervert who is after Shio. But technically Satou is the lesser of the evils. I dropped it even before it became an anime lmaooo

Asagao to Kase-san
AKA Kase-san and Morning Glories
Episodes: 1 (it's a 58 minute OVA, a movie?)

Tags: high school, tomboy

Notes: Based on a manga

This is an OVA of the manga series ‘Kase-san’ where Yui Yamada and Tomoka Kase have already recently started dating each other. Bunch of couple growth stuff happens.

I recommend you read the manga, since this is just an OVA. I can’t say how good either of them are, I was never a fan of the series pretty early on. It’s not because it’s bad, but because I just don’t really care much about tomboys. If I wanted to see a gay tomboy I’d just look into a mirror.

Fragtime
Episodes: This is a movie

Tags: high school, drama, supernatural

Notes: Based on a manga

Moritani has an unusual ability to stop time for three minutes a day. One day she uses it to look at the class idol Murakami’s panties - only to find out that her classmate is immune to her power.

I haven't watched the movie yet (I accidentally downloaded the Chinese subs version lol) but I remember enjoying the manga very much. It wasn’t particularly romantic or doki doki, but I found the premise very interesting.

Adachi and Shimamura
AKA Adachi to Shimamura
Episodes: 12

Tags: high school, slice of life

Notes: Adapted from a light novel, has a manga adaptation

Adachi meets Shimamura while skipping class. They quickly become friends, spending their high school days together. However, they gradually grow closer than friends.

The light novel might be a better read, but the anime has very gay scenes. Seeing it animated was fun. Some onee-samas are getting frustrated that this is extremely slow burn and are starting to dislike the main characters for different reasons. Like Shimamura is being dense on purpose, Adachi is spaghetting too much etc.

I’m in Love with the Villainess
Episodes: (to be added, not aired yet)

Tags: high school, fantasy, isekai, action, comedy

Notes: Adapted from a light novel, has a manga adaptation

Ordinary office worker Rei Oohashi wakes up in the body of the protagonist of her favourite otome game, Revolution. To her delight, the first person to greet her is also her favourite character, Claire Francois–the main antagonist of the story. Now, Rei is determined to romance Claire instead of the game's male leads.

Animation and art don't look the best, but it’s a fun ride. From the trailers, it looks like the manga is a better read. The original light novel was OK. You'll find more of my thoughts in the light novel entry for this.

Yuri is My Job!
AKA 'Watashi no Yuri wa Oshigoto desu!'' or 'Watayuri'
Episodes: 12

Tags: high school, comedy, drama, slice of life

Notes: Based on a manga

Hime is a high school girl who ends up working as a waitress at a cafe that’s basically a parody of Class S. She crushes on her ‘onee-sama’ there who, behind the scenes, really hates her guts.

This is basically: mental illness - the anime. I recommend reading the manga instead. Big warning that this is so dramatic that you might hate characters for being stupid.

Whispering You A Love Song
AKA Whispering Me a Love Song
Episodes: (to be added, it hasn't aired yet)

Tags: drama, music, high school

Notes: Based on a manga

Senpai x kouhai through music and singing. Senpai loves singing and kouhai loves listening.

I didn't like this one that much. The manga has beautiful art but the main couple has zero chemistry with each other and they're pretty bland. I'm also starting to get conflicted about the drama in the story in the later chapters.

Kuttsukiboshi OVA
Episodes: 2 (It's an OVA)

Tags: drama, supernatural, high school

Kiiko is your normal girl, besides her secret of being able to move objects with her mind. When a new student named Aaya moves in, Kiiko starts to develop feelings toward her. The two will eventually then start their romantic relationship. Although everything seems fine, Kiiko does not know that Aaya has another secret, a secret that could ruin Kiiko’s feelings and trust for Aaya.

A short 2 part original animation from 2010. I haven’t watched this one yet but it’s here so that I remember to.

Maria Watches Over Us
AKA ‘Maria-sama ga miteru’ or ‘marimite’
Episodes: 13

Tags: drama, high school

Notes: Based on a light novel, has a (dropped) manga adaptation

Yumi, a nobody, suddenly finds herself interacting with the members of the Mountain Lily Council and her crush (who is a part of that council).

This is the CLASSIC of the CLASSICS. This anime is old. This anime was responsible for the birth of 'class S' type content. It was so successful that it became a troupe. Notably the 'your necktie is crooked' memes.

Kannazuki no Miko
Episodes: 12

Tags: mecha, drama, high school, shounen, (warning: rape)

Notes: Based on a manga

Himeko and Chikane are two high school girls who are also reincarnations of the solar and lunar mikos. They must rise against their ancient enemy the Orochi, who’s back to destroy the world. Shrine maidens and mecha robots… There’s a love triangle between Himeko’s childhood friend (who is a male) and Chikane.

It wasn’t very romantic, in fact, I don’t even think the main pair should be together. But the fact that they ended up together and gave the hetfriends a good ‘fuck you’ with the ending is the most based thing that has happened in yuri history. There’s a good reason why this image has been parodied so much, it’s iconic.

Strawberry Panic
Episodes: 26

Tags: high school, drama

Notes: Based on a light novel, also has a manga adaptation

A very melodramatic series that follows the lives of girls living in the ‘strawberry dorms’. The series centres around the lives of the girls living in the dormitory and the events of the ‘etoile competition’, in which one couple is selected to represent the three schools.

I’m sorry, I couldn’t get myself to watch past episode 1 for this series. But it is a classic and also a parody of ‘class S’.

Revolutionary Girl Utena
Episodes: 39

Tags: drama, fantasy, comedy, action, high school

Notes: Has a manga adaptation and a movie

Utena is a tomboyish school girl who attends the prestigious Ohtori Academy. Her strong sense of chivalry pulls her into a series of duels with other members of the student council for the possession of the Rose Bride.

Every once in a blue moon I'd remember that I never got around to watching this. Then I'd get my ass off to watch it and then midway remember that I dropped it multiple times because there’s a het scene between Utena and someone else in the middle of the show and shut down. It's a rinse and repeat ritual at this point. But I know this is a beloved classic among old yuri fans and Utena does end up with the bride at the end. A little like Evangalion, but a little less so than that. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also has a movie.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury
Episodes: 26

Tags: high school, drama, political, mecha, action

Suletta Mercury transfers and attends school for the first time on another planet. On her first day she winds up in a battle with Bob and girlbosses herself a fiancee.

It's gundam, so romance is not the focus at all. Though I did very much enjoy Suletta Sundays while this was airing. Seeing the small moments between Suletta and Miorine is great stuff if you love clinging onto small bits of hints of romance. Yes, it does end in yuri. But don't expect too much. I'm not really sure why this is so popular for the yuri... But to be fair, other yuri just can't compare production wise. It's not too bad and has a ton of fan content if you're looking for that.

BaiHe

This section is for Chinese animations, there aren't many, so I decided to put it in this page as well. BaiHe is how 'Yuri' is read in Chinese.

Soulmate Adventure
AKA Feng Ling Yu Xiu
Episodes: 12

Tags:

Notes: It has a season 2.

I enjoyed watching this very much. This is a crowdfunded yuri baihe. It centers more on plot than romance however. Speaking of plot, it's about Feng Ling Er, a thief, and Bai Yu Xiu, a powerful martial artist. They travel around the world with pleasure, unaware of all the problems awaiting...

It's a little amateurish in terms of how it looks here and there. But the fight scenes are very solid and it's extremely fun watching Ling Er fight! I wish she fought more, but I can imagine the animators getting a huge headache whenever they have to animate her fighting LOL. In terms of yuri, it's more subtext, but you can tell the two girls are very good friends. They're so cute together!

It also looks like the series has gotten popular enough in China to attract the schizo yuri deniers, how wonderful. But that also worries me, because well... China. This means that they most likely can't go all the way. I also hope they don't start dailing back the yuri because of the attention they're getting, lest they get clamped down by the government. But it is also crowdfunded, they can't disappoint the funders...
